How Do Vestner Platform Lifts Work?

15th Aug 16

Have you ever wondered about the technology that drives Vestner platform lifts? We offer two distinctive lift series, the Low Rise Open Platform Series and the MAXIS Enclosed Platform Series, which utilise very different operating principles. Today I’m going to give you a peak behind the scenes so you can learn more about how our lifts go up and down.

Low Rise Open Platform Series uses a hydraulic drive system

All the lifts in our Low Rise Open Platform lift series, which rise to a height of up to 1.5m, use a hydraulic drive system. This means that the lift platform is attached to a hydraulic ram, a special type of pump that uses hydropower to create enough pressure to move the lift. When a person  presses the up button, the hydraulic pump forces hydraulic fluid from a reservoir into the hydraulic ram, causing the ram to extend and raise the lift. When the down button is pressed, the flow is reversed and the lift is lowered.

MAXIS Series utilises a screw and nut drive system

The enclosed lifts in the MAXIS series, which can rise up to 4m, are driven by a lead screw and nut system. Each of the vertical aluminium corner posts incorporates a lead screw connected to a motor/gearbox combination via pulleys and a timing belt. The lead screws run through nuts that are fixed to each corner of the platform. The motor turns all lead screws in a synchronised motion. Turning in one direction causes the lift to rise, while the other direction is used to lower the lift.

Common beneficial features

Despite their different drive technologies, both Vestner lift series have many convenient features in common. The use of these common features simplifies build work, installation and operation of the lifts. These features include:

  • No machine room – all machine parts are included within the footprint of the lift
  • No pit or other major build works required
  • No structural walls required
  • Battery operated with backup power supply, allowing lifts to operate for a limited time during mains supply cuts
