Vestner and the Christchurch Arts Centre Rebuild

1st Feb 19

The Arts Centre, located in Christchurch, New Zealand is the country’s largest collection of Category 1 heritage buildings. The Gothic Revival buildings date from 1877 and formerly housed what is now Canterbury University and two of the city’s secondary schools. Famous alumni include Lord Earnest Rutherford, Dame Ngaio Marsh and Sir Ä€pirana Ngata. Held in trust for Canterbury locals and visitors to the area, the Arts Centre is now known the world over as a place for arts, culture, education and creativity.

The Christchurch earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 caused significant damage to the historic buildings and sparked a major $290m restoration project. Local, national and overseas tradespeople (particularly stone masons) have all been involved in the rebuild. The restoration is funded by donations and sponsorship and with 23 buildings on site; the project is expected to take ten years to complete.

Vestner first became involved in the rebuild in 2015 with the provision of access lifts and we have supplied seven lifts to the complex so far. Some of the lifts provide access off the street while others were carefully installed in attic areas. All our lifts support much-improved access for people with mobility issues. Throughout the course of our involvement we have worked with several large construction companies and also with one of New Zealand’s key architectural companies — Warren and Mahoney.

We feel honoured to be involved in such a culturally and historically significant project and, with such rapid progress so far, we look forward to the day that the complex is completely finished for the people of Canterbury and its visitors to enjoy once again.
